Divorce Recovery, a branch of the Family
Enrichment Ministry, began in the Fall of 2002. Divorce Recovery
is a 10-week course offering spiritual insight into the rebuilding
process experienced by those who are newly divorced. The
ministry, which uses a self-help support group format, is facilitated
by trained lay counselors. Materials used in the course are
published by Lifeway Ministries.
The purpose of the group is to assist those who
have experienced divorce reconnect to the church as a single; grieve
losses, such as "being a couple"; and handle difficulties, such as
single parenting. Another goal of the group is to help
participants develop healthy relationships and circles of support and
encouragement.
Divorce Recovery seeks to provide a place where
the recently divorced can stay connected to the church . . . because
the church, with its foundation in Jesus Christ, is the healing place
for Christians who have experienced a divorce.
A Time for Healing workbooks
are used throughout the course. Topics covered include grief,
finding forgiveness, accepting resurrection as a single, and
reconnecting to the church and ministry. Groups meet on Wednesday
nights during regular service times. The group is closed to new
members once the seminars have started to ensure group
confidentiality. Interviews are conducted at the beginning of the
semester to ensure participant appropriateness and that avenues toward
reconciliation have been considered. Group size is limited to
eight participants with two facilitators per group. Lay
counselors are trained using Wise Counsel course materials.
